Taiwan Launches Investigation Into Local Commissioner Over Forbidden China Speech

Date:

The Taiwanese government launched an official investigation into Taitung County Commissioner Yao Ching-ling. This serious inquiry followed her sudden participation in a highly controversial cross-strait forum in China. The Mainland Affairs Council previously prohibited all local government personnel from attending this event in person. However, Yao easily circumvented this high-level restriction by submitting a prerecorded video speech to organizers instead. Consequently, authorities will now determine whether her calculated actions violated current national security laws.

An anonymous government representative expressed intense disapproval regarding her decision to bypass travel restrictions. Furthermore, the official claimed that this video message directly assisted the Chinese Communist Party. The Ministry of Agriculture subsequently initiated its own official investigation to evaluate potential legal breaches. Authorities also confirmed they would review video submissions from other politicians if citizens file complaints. This growing official investigation highlights the deepening tension between local economic interests and strict security policies.

During the broadcasted video, Yao explained that the central administration rejected her attendance application. Nevertheless, she explicitly thanked regional Chinese business partners for signing trade agreements to purchase crops. Yao later defended her controversial actions by emphasizing her core duty to help regional farmers. Meanwhile, the Mainland Affairs Council clarified that it supports agricultural trade but rejects political propaganda. It stated that Taipei must not allow Beijing to create the false impression of political alignment.

The standard cross-strait gathering featured matchmaking sessions and trade contracts targeting various Taiwanese fruits. Additionally, China’s Taiwan Affairs Office Director Song Tao used his keynote speech to reinforce conditions. He reiterated that regional progress requires accepting the 1992 Consensus and opposing Taiwanese independence. Local leaders continue to balance these complex political demands against the immediate economic needs of farmers. Government agencies will monitor future cross-strait trade forums closely to prevent further legal violations.
