New Housing Left Empty as North Korean Workers Flee Harsh Rural Towns

Date:

A sharp increase in abandoned properties undermines state development initiatives within North Korea. Local reports reveal that newly constructed residences turn into empty ruins within two years. Specifically, this systemic failure stems from a critical disconnect in current housing allocation. Consequently, state efforts to populate rural regions fail as laborers desert their properties.

Furthermore, state planners initially built these communities near the Pongchon coal mine. This infrastructure expansion targeted discharged soldiers and mobilized young workers under labor programs. To encourage permanent regional settlement, the state distributed this free new housing. Nevertheless, poor workplace conditions and low income levels drive these young citizens away.

As a result, these vacant structures become immediate targets for local thieves. Once a property sits dark for several months, criminal elements smash the locks. At first, thieves strip away valuable household goods like furniture and cookware. Subsequently, passing pedestrians steal the remaining core structural elements one piece at a time.

Alarmingly, local school administrators exacerbate this destruction to fulfill strict state recycling quotas. Students regularly strip away window glass and insulation sheets from the abandoned structures. Consequently, these completed construction projects deteriorate into completely unlivable eyesores very quickly. Therefore, longtime regional residents openly question the fairness of this rural new housing.

Ultimately, local citizens argue that the government should prioritize historical residents first. Observers emphasize that keys alone cannot force long-term human settlement without economic opportunities. Hence, independent experts project that rural real estate abandonment will continue. Finally, the supreme leadership must implement broader economic reforms to stop this workforce flight.
