National Security Remains Top Priority for Taiwan President William Lai

Date:

President William Lai told foreign reporters Thursday that safeguarding Taiwan is not a provocation against Beijing. He emphasized that the island simply wants to protect its democratic lifestyle and remain free. Consequently, the president asked the United States to speed up approval for pending arms sales. These weapons are vital for Taiwan as it faces increasing military pressure from the mainland.

China claims the island as its territory and continues expanding its military reach across the region. Therefore, President Lai argued that Beijing remains the primary force causing instability in the Taiwan Strait. Although opposition lawmakers recently cut part of the defense budget, the government still prioritizes military readiness. New legislation will now provide funding to develop local drones and other uncrewed aerial systems.

The administration believes these investments in national security provide a necessary deterrent against potential military aggression. President Lai also stated that Taiwan will maintain close communication with Washington to ensure ongoing stability. He clarified that the island intends to fulfill its responsibilities alongside international partners to prevent conflict. Ultimately, the president stressed that only the Taiwanese people have the right to determine their future.

Lai continues to advocate for higher military spending to align with global defense expectations and standards. By purchasing new equipment, Taiwan sends a clear message about its determination to protect its territory. Furthermore, the president insists that the island must not change course despite the challenges it faces. Protecting national security remains the most effective way to ensure lasting peace within this critical region.
