South Korea President Lee to Make First State Visit to Mongolia in 15 Years

Date:

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung will pay a state visit to Mongolia from July 9 to 11 at the invitation of President Khurelsukh Ukhnaa. First Lady Kim Hea Kyung will accompany President Lee throughout the visit. Furthermore, the trip marks the first state visit by a South Korean president to Mongolia in 15 years. Consequently, the visit carries significant diplomatic weight for both countries’ growing strategic relationship.

During the state visit, Presidents Khurelsukh and Lee will hold formal bilateral talks at the highest level. Their agenda will cover expanding the two countries’ Strategic Partnership across multiple priority areas. Additionally, both sides plan to deepen economic cooperation and strengthen collaboration on regional and international issues. Several intergovernmental and interagency agreements are also expected to be signed during the visit.

President Lee and First Lady Kim will attend the opening ceremony of Mongolia’s National Naadam Festival as honored guests. The Naadam Festival is Mongolia’s most celebrated national event, marking the country’s independence and cultural heritage annually. Their participation as honored guests adds a ceremonial and cultural dimension to the diplomatic visit. Furthermore, the timing of the state visit alongside Naadam underscores Mongolia’s desire to celebrate the bilateral relationship publicly.

Mongolia and South Korea established diplomatic relations on March 26, 1990. South Korea opened its embassy in Ulaanbaatar that same year, while Mongolia established its Seoul embassy in 1991. Moreover, bilateral ties have steadily deepened across multiple partnership levels over subsequent decades. The relationship progressed from a Good Neighborly Friendship Partnership in 2006 to a Comprehensive Partnership in 2011 and a Strategic Partnership in 2021.

The upcoming state visit therefore arrives at a pivotal moment for both countries’ bilateral agenda. Going forward, analysts expect the signed agreements to advance cooperation in trade, investment, and regional security frameworks. Additionally, Lee’s personal attendance at Naadam signals South Korea’s commitment to engaging Mongolia beyond purely economic interests. Ultimately, the visit positions both nations to further strengthen their Strategic Partnership across diplomatic, economic, and cultural dimensions.
