South Korea Seeks Deeper Defense Ties With NATO

Date:

South Korea pushed for deeper defense cooperation with NATO during President Lee Jae Myung’s first alliance summit. Beyond simply selling weapons, Seoul now seeks a lasting role within NATO’s industrial ecosystem. This goal spans supply chains, joint production networks and shared military standards entirely.

NATO members are rebuilding stockpiles and boosting defense spending amid Russia’s ongoing war. European allies invested $574 billion in 2025 alone, marking a twenty percent increase. Consequently, this rearmament drive has created new opportunities for South Korea’s defense industry abroad.

According to research fellow Tereza Novotna, the visit meaningfully links security cooperation with industrial partnership. Meanwhile, South Korea’s arms exports to Europe have grown substantially over recent years. Data shows Seoul supplied 8.6 percent of European NATO imports between 2021 and 2025.

However, deeper defense cooperation faces real structural challenges within Europe’s evolving industrial strategy. The European Union now requires most defense products to originate domestically by 2030. Additionally, Seoul recently lost Canada’s submarine contract to a German-led consortium instead.

Therefore, experts argue that export volume alone will not secure lasting partnership. Professor Daniel Fiott emphasized that joint production and technology sharing matter far more. Similarly, analyst Lami Kim suggested Seoul pursue NATO standardization agreements for military equipment access.

Beyond weapons, deeper defense cooperation could also benefit South Korea’s own security position. Doo Jin-ho noted stronger interoperability might support Korean defense during any peninsula contingency. Nevertheless, officials remain cautious about avoiding perceptions of alignment against any specific nation.

Novotna explained that Seoul must balance NATO engagement without appearing like an Asian outpost. Still, European experts believe South Korea has considerable room to expand its role further. Ultimately, this evolving defense cooperation reflects Seoul’s ambition to become more than an arms supplier.
