Japan’s EV Sales Double in First Half of 2026

Date:

Japan’s EV sales more than doubled during the first half of 2026 compared with last year. Total figures reached 59,337 units, representing a record 3 percent market share. The Japan Automobile Dealers Association released these figures alongside other industry organizations Monday.

Toyota’s bZ4X led overall EV sales with 13,777 units, nearly seventy times last year’s total. Nissan’s LEAF followed among domestic manufacturers, selling 10,012 units during the same period. Meanwhile, Tesla topped foreign brands, with estimated sales reaching approximately 12,000 units nationwide.

Improved vehicle performance largely drove this surge in EV sales this year. Previously, Japanese electric vehicles offered shorter driving ranges compared with foreign competitors at similar prices. However, Toyota upgraded the bZ4X’s range by thirty percent, extending it to 746 kilometers.

Similarly, Nissan launched a redesigned LEAF in January featuring popular SUV styling and extended range. Government policy support has also significantly boosted EV sales across multiple vehicle segments. Specifically, officials raised maximum EV subsidies by ¥400,000 to ¥1.3 million in January.

Honda’s compact Super-ONE model has particularly benefited from this expanded subsidy program recently. Originally priced near ¥3.39 million, buyers can purchase it for just ¥2.09 million. Consequently, demand proved overwhelming, forcing some dealerships to temporarily pause new order acceptance.

Additionally, Tokyo’s metropolitan government raised its own subsidy cap in July amid rising oil prices. Nevertheless, analysts remain cautious about whether this EV sales momentum will ultimately continue. A troubling market distortion has emerged, where new vehicles now cost less than used ones.

This pricing gap could discourage buyers worried about long-term resale value going forward. Furthermore, automakers remain hesitant to expand EV production due to parts-industry employment concerns. Analyst Hisashi Ando noted that sales remain concentrated among limited models, limiting broader market growth.
