Mongolia Forms Working Group for World Heritage Committee Role

Date:

Mongolia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs convened its first working group meeting addressing new World Heritage responsibilities. Deputy Minister Amartuvshin Gombosuren led the session, focusing on Mongolia’s recent committee membership. This marks Mongolia’s first-ever election to the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in its history.

During opening remarks, Amartuvshin emphasized how this achievement elevates Mongolia’s international reputation significantly. Furthermore, he stressed that membership strengthens the country’s contribution toward global heritage protection efforts. Consequently, Mongolia now holds greater responsibility within international cultural and natural preservation initiatives.

The deputy minister also highlighted the importance of adhering to scientific, evidence-based principles. According to him, this approach aligns with Mongolia’s open, independent and multi-pillared foreign policy framework. Therefore, decisions regarding heritage sites must rely on rigorous research and documentation standards.

Working group members specifically discussed Mongolia’s nomination titled “Funeral Sites of the Xiongnu Elite.” This submission seeks inscription on the prestigious World Heritage List for consideration. Additionally, participants reviewed preparations ahead of the committee’s upcoming 48th session.

That session will convene in Busan, South Korea, from July 19 through 29, 2026. Consequently, Mongolian officials must finalize necessary documentation and strategic priorities before this gathering. Meanwhile, the working group addressed other relevant issues tied to heritage preservation efforts.

Mongolia originally joined the 1972 World Heritage Convention back in 1990. Since then, the country has successfully inscribed six national sites onto the World Heritage List. This new committee role, however, represents a significant expansion of Mongolia’s international standing.

Looking ahead, Mongolia’s performance within this committee could influence future heritage nominations and partnerships. Officials will likely continue emphasizing scientific rigor while pursuing broader international recognition. Ultimately, this development strengthens Mongolia’s voice within global cultural and environmental preservation discussions.
