Heavy Rain to Continue Across South Korea Through Thursday

Date:

Heavy rain will continue sweeping across South Korea through Thursday night, weather officials confirmed Wednesday. The Korea Meteorological Administration’s 11 a.m. forecast predicts rainfall spreading throughout most regions nationwide. Meanwhile, the Seoul metropolitan area could see continued rain lingering into early Friday morning.

According to the KMA, a stationary front moving across the peninsula is driving this heavy rain. Daejeon, Sejong and both Chungcheong provinces should expect between 80 and 150 millimeters through Thursday. Additionally, some localized areas may witness rainfall exceeding 200 millimeters during this period.

Seoul, Incheon and Gyeonggi Province will likely receive between 50 and 100 millimeters through Friday. However, certain areas could see totals surpassing 150 millimeters before conditions eventually improve. Similarly, inland and mountainous regions of Gangwon Province face comparable rainfall expectations this week.

Northern and central areas of North Gyeongsang Province should also brace for significant precipitation through Thursday. Forecasters warned that intense downpours remain likely, particularly during nighttime hours across multiple regions. Specifically, Chungcheong provinces could see 30 to 50 millimeters hourly on Wednesday evening.

Furthermore, South Chungcheong Province might experience rainfall exceeding 50 millimeters per hour early Thursday. In response, Interior Minister Yoon Ho-jung dispatched officials to seven metropolitan and provincial governments nationwide. These officials will support local emergency response efforts throughout the ongoing heavy rain event.

Authorities plan to monitor vulnerable areas closely, including mountainous slopes prone to landslides. Additionally, officials may implement preemptive traffic controls near underpasses susceptible to flooding risks. Despite the persistent heavy rain, temperatures will remain elevated, reaching highs between 26 and 35 degrees.

Looking ahead, residents should prepare for continued disruptions as this weather system persists regionally. Local governments will likely maintain heightened vigilance until rainfall subsides later this week. Meanwhile, officials continue urging caution in flood-prone areas as conditions evolve throughout the coming days.
