Mongolia’s tour guides association urged immediate government action addressing an ongoing fuel shortage affecting tourism nationwide. During a recent press conference, representatives emphasized this issue’s urgency during peak tourist season currently. Furthermore, concerns intensified ahead of the upcoming COP17 conference scheduled for August.
Since international delegates will arrive in large numbers throughout this conference period, officials stressed coordination remains essential. Consequently, the association called for urgent meetings involving several government ministries and fuel-importing companies. Specifically, they requested cooperation from tourism, transport and mineral resource ministries jointly.
According to representatives, ensuring stable fuel supply remains critical for maintaining reliable air and road transport. Without decisive action, they warned, this fuel shortage could damage both tourism operations and Mongolia’s international reputation. Therefore, addressing supply disruptions quickly appears essential for protecting the country’s growing tourism industry.
Notably, Mongolia has already welcomed nearly 569,000 foreign tourists through July this year alone. This figure represents a significant 18.9 percent increase compared with the same period last year. Additionally, July alone brought over 150,000 tourists, marking the highest monthly total in four years.
Despite this impressive growth, tourism representatives highlighted how the current fuel shortage disrupts numerous essential services nationwide. Specifically, flights, road transport, tour itineraries and hospitality services have all experienced significant operational challenges recently. Consequently, these disruptions threaten both tourist safety and the overall quality of visitor experiences.
