Lai Considers Cabinet Reshuffle After May 20

Date:

President Lai Ching-te is reportedly considering a Cabinet reshuffle following May 20. The potential changes could respond to recall elections targeting the Kuomintang (KMT) and the expected by-elections. According to a Monday report from the China Times, Lai has been weighing the reshuffle for some time. The scope of these changes will likely depend on the outcome of the Democratic Progressive Party’s (DPP) ongoing recall campaign.

Premier Cho Jung-tai is expected to remain in his position. However, sources indicate that five controversial ministers may be replaced. These ministers include Health Minister Chiu Tai-yuan, Economic Affairs Minister Kuo Jyh-huei, Defense Minister Wellington Koo, Interior Minister Liu Shih-fang, and National Development Council Minister Liu Jing-ching. These officials have faced public criticism, with some seen as not aligning closely with Lai.

The reshuffle could bring in new appointments, particularly officials with stronger communication skills and a more combative style. This shift may be necessary to address the legislative gridlock and anticipated recall votes. Liu Shih-fang, one of the ministers mentioned, declined to comment on the speculation. Instead, she referred all inquiries to Premier Cho.

However, some legislators have questioned the credibility of the report. DPP Legislator Wu Su-yao expressed doubts, suggesting the report might have political motives. She emphasized that the administration remains focused on unity, not internal reshuffling. DPP Legislator Lin Chun-hsien, a close ally of Lai, supported this sentiment. He stated that Lai is committed to promoting party unity and downplayed the likelihood of a significant reshuffle while the party focuses on its recall efforts.

Despite the ongoing speculation, the administration’s priority remains ensuring political stability. A reshuffle may depend on the status of the DPP’s recall efforts. As the situation develops, Lai’s Cabinet reshuffle considerations continue to attract attention.
