Emperor Emeritus Hospitalized for Heart Exam Amid Ischemia Risk

Date:

Former Emperor Akihito was admitted to the University of Tokyo Hospital on Tuesday afternoon for a detailed heart examination. This comes after doctors raised concerns about a possible case of myocardial ischemia — a condition caused by restricted blood flow to the heart.

The 90-year-old Emperor Emeritus arrived by car around 3 p.m., accompanied by Empress Emerita Michiko. It marks his first hospitalization since 2012, when he underwent successful coronary artery bypass surgery.

The Imperial Household Agency reported that a routine checkup in mid-April raised initial concerns. During a follow-up re-examination at his residence, physicians diagnosed a high likelihood of myocardial ischemia. Medical staff then recommended further testing at the hospital.

In 2022, the former emperor was diagnosed with right heart failure due to tricuspid valve insufficiency. Since then, he has managed the condition through medication and dietary fluid restrictions.

The Emperor Emeritus hospitalized for heart exam has drawn public attention, especially given his long-standing contributions to Japanese society and his advanced age. His son, Emperor Naruhito, has been kept informed of his father’s condition.

The Imperial Household Agency is expected to provide updates after the current round of tests is completed.
