Princess Aiko Visits Osaka-Kansai Expo to Support Global Engagement and Red Cross Work

Date:

Princess Aiko, the only daughter of Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako, arrived in Osaka on Thursday morning aboard a commercial flight for a two-day visit to the Osaka-Kansai Expo.

Her visit reflects her growing public role and her commitment to humanitarian work. Princess Aiko, who is employed by the Japanese Red Cross Society, will tour the Expo site and visit multiple international pavilions, including those connected to her organization.

On Thursday, the princess visited Yumeshima, the artificial island hosting the Expo, where she observed the Grand Ring and explored pavilions such as the Japan Pavilion and the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement Pavilion.

On Friday, her itinerary includes a stop at the Singaporean Pavilion, the Earth Mart Pavilion—which highlights food and sustainability—and exhibitions from nations including Kenya, Ghana, and Yemen.

This visit comes after April’s opening ceremony, attended by senior members of the Imperial family, including the Emperor, Empress, Crown Prince Akishino (honorary president of the Expo), and Crown Princess Kiko.

The Imperial family has a long history of active participation in global events like World Expositions. During the 2005 Aichi Expo, family members visited all 92 national pavilions. Princess Aiko’s presence continues that tradition, symbolizing Japan’s commitment to international cooperation and cultural diplomacy.
