A five-year study focused on the Chishima Trench, located about 150 kilometers (93 miles) offshore from Hokkaido, revealed worrying seismic conditions. A government report on the situation stated that the likelihood of a massive quake in the trench within the next 30 years is between 7 percent and 40 percent. A tremor of magnitude 8.8 or higher could have devastating consequences for the region.
