Warning Issued as Experts Identify Seismic Risk off Hokkaido

Date:

As Japan marks the anniversary of the devastating 2011 earthquake and tsunami, experts are raising concerns about a potential future disaster. Recent studies of an underwater trench off Hokkaido suggest the area may be at risk for another powerful earthquake.

A five-year study focused on the Chishima Trench, located about 150 kilometers (93 miles) offshore from Hokkaido, revealed worrying seismic conditions. Scientists discovered that two tectonic plates in the trench are not sliding past each other as expected. Instead, they appear to be fused together. When these plates eventually break free, a significant amount of seismic energy will likely be released.

The Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology, along with scientists from Tohoku University and Hokkaido University, conducted the study. The research team believes the plates may have been stuck together since the last major earthquake in the region, which occurred in the 17th century.

A government report on the situation stated that the likelihood of a massive quake in the trench within the next 30 years is between 7 percent and 40 percent. A tremor of magnitude 8.8 or higher could have devastating consequences for the region.

The experts stress that while the timing of such an event is uncertain, the risk remains high. They urge authorities and local communities to be prepared for a possible future disaster. The study also highlights the need for continued monitoring and research to better understand the seismic activity in this area.

As Japan reflects on the 2011 disaster, experts continue to study the Chishima Trench. Their findings underscore the ongoing seismic threats faced by the country. With the potential for another significant earthquake, it is crucial for Japan to remain vigilant and ready for future challenges.
