Mizu Uchiwa Fans Hit Peak Production in Gifu

Date:

As summer draws near, artisans in Gifu Prefecture work tirelessly to craft Mizu Uchiwa fans, a traditional symbol of seasonal elegance in Japan. Each year, their production reaches its peak in early June, just before the hot months set in.

The process begins with attaching Ganpishi, a traditional washi paper, to bamboo frames. This careful work gives Mizu Uchiwa fans their lightweight and natural base. The paper sticks tightly to the frame and forms the structure needed for the final look.

Soon after, each fan gets coated with a clear varnish. This layer serves both aesthetic and functional purposes. It adds shine and helps preserve the paper in humid weather. Moreover, it allows the paper to transform over time.

During the drying process, which lasts about ten days, the paper slowly becomes translucent. At that stage, the unique designs—such as morning glories and goldfish—appear to float in mid-air. These designs define the beauty of Mizu Uchiwa fans and attract both locals and tourists.

People use the fans not only to cool off, but also as decorative items. Many households in Japan display them on walls or in entryways during the summer season. This shows how tradition still finds a place in modern life.

Tourists visiting Gifu often explore local workshops that specialize in Mizu Uchiwa fans. These workshops sometimes offer hands-on experiences, letting guests create their own versions. As a result, demand increases each year, especially from cultural enthusiasts and collectors.

Additionally, the fans support sustainability. Artisans use bamboo and biodegradable washi paper, which reduce environmental impact. These eco-conscious materials appeal to those looking for beauty and responsibility in the products they buy.

Even as new trends emerge, Mizu Uchiwa fans continue to symbolize Japanese summer. They blend craftsmanship, artistry, and tradition. Thanks to the dedication of Gifu’s artisans, these fans remain both functional and iconic.
