In a dramatic turn of events, Prime Minister Oyun-Erdene’s key projects not enough to secure parliamentary confidence. Lawmakers in the State Great Khural debated his future during a tense plenary session. Although his government launched multiple delayed projects, Parliament ultimately rejected the Motion of Confidence.Prime Minister Oyun-Erdene personally presented the draft resolution. He praised his administration’s record since forming the Joint Government. He emphasized that they revived several long-stalled initiatives. For instance, the Erdeneburen Hydropower Plant moved forward after six decades.
He also highlighted achievements in infrastructure and energy. The Mongolia-France uranium project resumed after a 28-year delay. The cross-border railway at Gashuunsukhait-Gantsmod also began after 20 years of political stagnation. In addition, the Prime Minister pointed to strong economic growth. He said Mongolia’s GDP doubled from MNT 37.4 trillion to MNT 80 trillion. GDP per capita rose from USD 4,128 to USD 6,898 in three years. He noted a boost in investor confidence and international credit ratings.
Despite these claims, key projects not enough to convince all factions. Chairman Bat-Erdene Jadamba reported that 73.9% of the Standing Committee backed the Prime Minister. However, the Democratic Party voiced strong objections.Party leader Tsogtgerel Odon argued that the vote distracted from public demands. He said the Prime Minister avoided calls for financial transparency. The Party abstained, framing it as a “no confidence” stance. Tsogtgerel also criticized the ruling party’s decision to expel the Democratic Party from the coalition.
President Khurelsukh Ukhnaa attended the session and supported the parliamentary system. He warned against calls for a presidential system. He also promised no further constitutional changes during his term. Additionally, he said he would not seek re-election. After further debate, MPs voted by secret ballot. Seventy-seven lawmakers approved this voting method. Out of 82 total votes, only 44 backed the Prime Minister. That counted for just 53.6% of votes cast.
However, Mongolian law requires at least 64 votes for the Motion to pass. Because it fell short, the draft Resolution failed. Chairman Amarbayasgalan Dashzegve confirmed the result. He declared the Resolution on the Prime Minister’s Resignation approved. Oyun-Erdene will stay in office temporarily. He must continue duties until a new Prime Minister takes over.
