Cancer Continues Leading Cause in Taiwan

Date:

Cancer remains leading cause of death in Taiwan for the 43rd consecutive year in 2024. According to the Ministry of Health and Welfare, Taiwan recorded 201,383 deaths last year. This number represents a 2% decrease from 2023, with 4,192 fewer deaths. The overall mortality rate fell to 860.2 deaths per 100,000 people. Additionally, the age-standardized mortality rate dropped by 4.5%, reaching 410.3 per 100,000 based on WHO’s world standard population. These figures suggest an encouraging decline in death rates across many causes.

Lu Shu-chun, a section chief in the Ministry’s Department of Statistics, said the top 10 causes of death made up 74.2% of all deaths. However, she noted that while most death rates decreased, pneumonia and suicide slightly increased compared to last year. Notably, deaths caused by diabetes, kidney diseases, and accidental injuries saw the sharpest declines. Meanwhile, COVID-19 dropped significantly in rank, falling from sixth place in 2023 to 14th in 2024. This drop reflects Taiwan’s improved management of the pandemic.

Lung cancer continued to lead cancer-related deaths for the 21st straight year. This shows that cancer remains leading cause of death and a persistent health challenge in Taiwan. Other types of cancer also contributed to the high mortality rate, but lung cancer remained dominant. Moreover, suicide re-entered the top 10 causes of death after being absent in previous years. The slight rise in suicide rates raises concerns about mental health issues in the country.

In summary, cancer remains leading cause of death in Taiwan, while the country experiences overall mortality declines. COVID-19’s impact has lessened, but suicide rates require attention. These trends highlight the ongoing health challenges Taiwan faces today. By focusing on cancer prevention and mental health, Taiwan aims to reduce mortality rates further in the coming years. The government continues to monitor causes of death closely and improve public health strategies. Ultimately, cancer remains leading cause of death in Taiwan, underscoring the need for ongoing vigilance and healthcare innovation.
