New Cabinet Lineup Features Fresh Ministerial Picks

Date:

President Lee Jae Myung introduced a new cabinet lineup on Sunday, reinforcing his commitment to political reform and development. He appointed six new ministers and named several senior aides, signaling a strong push to reshape government leadership.

Lee selected Koo Yun-cheol, an economics professor and former vice finance minister, to lead the Finance Ministry. Koo, currently teaching at Seoul National University, brings academic insight and policy experience to the new cabinet lineup.

Lee also tapped Jeong Eun-kyeong to serve as minister of health and welfare. She previously directed the national COVID-19 response. Before joining Lee’s presidential campaign, Jeong researched infectious diseases at Seoul National University Hospital.

For the Justice Ministry, Lee chose Rep. Jung Sung-ho, a five-term lawmaker known for supporting prosecution reform. Jung has long supported Lee’s political agenda and will lead efforts to reshape the criminal justice system.

In addition, Lee nominated Rep. Yun Ho-jung as interior minister. Yun brings extensive legislative experience to the new cabinet lineup. Lee also picked Doosan Enerbility CEO Kim Jung-kwan to head the Industry Ministry. Kim previously worked at the Finance Ministry before moving to the energy sector, giving him cross-sector expertise.

Lee Jin-sook, former Chungnam National University president, was named education minister. Her academic leadership background aligns with Lee’s education priorities.

President Lee appointed Kim Kyoung-soo as head of the new Presidential Committee for Decentralization and Balanced Development. Kim, a former South Gyeongsang governor, previously ran against Lee in the Democratic Party’s primary race. After his primary defeat, Kim quickly endorsed Lee and helped shape regional development strategies.

Lee also added Bong Wook as civil affairs secretary and Jeon Seong-hwan as public engagement secretary. Both appointees are expected to boost transparency and public trust.

Lee retained Oh Yu-kyoung as food and drug safety minister and Song Mi-ryung as agriculture minister. These appointments ensure continuity in essential policy areas. Through this new cabinet lineup, Lee aims to combine fresh talent and experienced allies to implement his reform vision.
