Taiwan Launches 6th Stealth Missile Corvette to Strengthen Navy

Date:

Taiwan recently launched its sixth stealth missile corvette, boosting its naval defense amid growing security concerns. The newest vessel, named Tan Chiang after a river in Nantou, is the first ship in the second batch of Tuo Chiang-class corvettes. These ships are called “carrier killers” because of their advanced weapons and stealth capabilities.

The naming and launch ceremony marked an important milestone for Taiwan’s Navy. Earlier, the Navy received the first six stealth missile corvettes, all built by Lungteh Shipbuilding in Yilan. The Tan Chiang is the first of five more ships planned in the new batch to strengthen Taiwan’s maritime forces.

Following construction, Tan Chiang moved to the shipyard for weapon and sensor installation. Once completed, the Navy will take delivery of the ship. Afterward, the crew will begin intensive training to operate the corvette’s advanced systems.

This stealth missile corvette carries a 76 mm naval gun, which can rapidly engage surface targets. It also includes a Phalanx Close-in Weapon System, designed to intercept and destroy incoming missiles and aircraft. Taiwan has armed the vessel with four Hsiung Feng II anti-ship missiles and eight Hsiung Feng III missiles, giving it formidable strike power. Additionally, the corvette carries Sea Sword II missiles to counter aerial threats, creating a layered defense system.

One of the main advantages of the stealth missile corvette is its low radar signature. Special design elements reduce its detectability, making it harder for enemies to track or target. These stealth features give Taiwan’s Navy an edge in contested waters, enhancing its deterrence capabilities.

Taiwan places strong emphasis on developing and building advanced weapons systems domestically. This strategy addresses growing military pressures from China. The Tuo Chiang-class corvettes reflect Taiwan’s commitment to defense independence. They also help improve the Navy’s operational readiness for future challenges.

Overall, the launch of Tan Chiang highlights Taiwan’s continued investment in modern naval assets. These stealth missile corvettes will play a critical role in protecting Taiwan’s maritime interests. They also contribute to regional stability and security by strengthening Taiwan’s ability to respond to potential threats.
