Pope Francis and North Korea: Why the Meeting Never Happened

Date:

Pope Francis and North Korea were once expected to make history with a groundbreaking face-to-face meeting. But despite widespread hope, the meeting never took place. According to Cardinal Lazarus You Heung-sik, the silence from Pyongyang made it impossible.

The cardinal spoke at a press conference hosted by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea. He said that in 2018, then-President Moon Jae-in personally asked Pope Francis if he would meet Kim Jong-un. The Pope agreed without hesitation. He hoped the encounter could ease military tensions and bring healing to families divided since the 1950 Korean War.

After that discussion, the Vatican made formal attempts to reach North Korea. The Secretary of State used several diplomatic channels to open communication. However, the North never responded. No answer came from any official or intermediary.

Francis continued to support humanitarian aid to North Korea. He urged peaceful dialogue between all parties. But with no reply, the meeting never moved forward.

Pope Francis and North Korea shared no direct contact during his lifetime. Still, his legacy may influence future talks. Cardinal You said he had briefed Pope Leo XIV on the matter. While he declined to elaborate, he noted that the new Pope listened carefully.

President Lee Jae-myung has sent a formal letter requesting a meeting with the current Pope. Cardinal You said he hopes it will take place this year. He also believes that Pope Leo XIV, being American, could help improve relations between Washington and Pyongyang.

Cardinal You also hopes to invite North Korean participants to World Youth Day in 2027. The global event will be held in Seoul. Details about this effort remain limited.

Turning to domestic issues, the cardinal expressed concern about growing social divisions in South Korea. He emphasized empathy, compassion, and listening to others. Moreover, he quoted John 17:19 to highlight the value of truth and mutual understanding.

He called on the Lee administration to bring unity after a turbulent year. He also urged politicians to act with kindness and responsibility.

Although efforts between Pope Francis and North Korea fell short, the message of peace and dialogue remains. The Church continues to believe that open hearts can lead to open doors.
