Veteran Cinematographer Lin Honored After Passing Away, Remembered for Lasting Impact on Taiwanese Cinema

Veteran Taiwanese cinematographer Lin, who received a prestigious Golden Horse Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021, has passed away, his family confirmed. Lin, widely celebrated for his influential work in the Taiwanese film industry, was 91 years old.

Known for his pivotal contributions to Taiwanese Hoklo cinema, Lin was the first cinematographer ever awarded the prestigious Golden Horse Lifetime Achievement Award, receiving the honor at the 58th Golden Horse Awards in 2021 alongside acclaimed director Tsai Yang-ming.

Lin began his distinguished career in the early era of Taiwanese cinema, collaborating extensively with legendary director Pai Ching-jui on acclaimed films including “Lonely Seventeen” and “Home Sweet Home.” Throughout his impressive career spanning over half a century, he contributed to more than 130 feature films, earning widespread acclaim for his distinctive style and artistry.

Among Lin’s notable works are the classics Lonely Seventeen and Home Sweet Home, with both films highlighting his innovative approach to cinematography. His acclaimed work on Falling Snowflakes earned him further accolades, including a Best Cinematography Award.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Lin dedicated significant time mentoring the next generation of filmmakers, nurturing notable cinematographers such as Mark Lee Ping-bing, while also regularly sharing his knowledge through university lectures.

His passing marks a significant loss to Taiwan’s cultural and artistic community, as many in the film industry recognize Lin’s role as an influential mentor and pioneer.
