Taiwan Looks Forward to Strengthening Ties with Belize and the US After Briceno’s Re-election

Date:

Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed optimism about further strengthening trilateral cooperation with Belize and the United States following Belize Prime Minister John Briceno’s recent re-election.

The statement came in response to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s congratulatory message to Prime Minister Briceno, in which Rubio praised Belize’s ongoing partnership with Taiwan, describing Taiwan as a “democratic force for good” in the region.

The Ministry emphasized its gratitude to the US for continuously supporting Taiwan’s diplomatic relations and democratic values, noting that Taiwan swiftly congratulated Prime Minister Briceno following his election victory. Taiwan pledged to continue working closely with Belize and the US to deepen their trilateral ties and protect shared values of democracy, freedom, and regional stability.

Belize, which established formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan in 1989, is among Taiwan’s remaining 12 diplomatic allies worldwide. Prime Minister Briceno notably attended the inauguration of Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te in May 2024, underscoring the strong bond between the two nations.
