Japan’s Emperor and Empress Conclude State Visit to Mongolia

Date:

Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako of Japan recently completed a significant State Visit to Mongolia. This visit happened following an official invitation from the President of Mongolia, Khurelsukh Ukhnaa. It marked a milestone in the diplomatic relations between the two countries.

At the start of the visit, President Khurelsukh Ukhnaa and First Lady Bolortsetseg Luvsandorj warmly welcomed the Emperor and Empress at their residence in the Ikh Tenger Complex. Shortly after, they held an official meeting focused on strengthening the bonds between Mongolia and Japan. During this meeting, they discussed ways to deepen bilateral cooperation and promote friendly ties between their peoples.

In addition to the formal talks, Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako took part in the Opening Ceremony of Mongolia’s National Naadam Festival. This event celebrates Mongolian culture and tradition. The Emperor and Empress also attended several other ceremonial occasions as Guests of Honor. Their presence highlighted the strong cultural and diplomatic connection shared by the two countries.

The State Visit to Mongolia was especially important because it supported Mongolia’s “Third Neighbor” policy. This strategy aims to strengthen relationships beyond its two immediate neighbors, Russia and China. Japan stands out as a key partner in this policy because of shared values and mutual interests. Therefore, the visit helped to expand cooperation and reinforce the special strategic partnership between Mongolia and Japan.

Emperor Naruhito ascended the Chrysanthemum Throne on May 1, 2019, beginning the Reiwa era in Japan. Since his enthronement, he has made official state visits to Indonesia in 2023 and the United Kingdom in 2024. This visit to Mongolia is the Emperor’s third official state visit, emphasizing the importance Japan places on its relationship with Mongolia.

It is worth noting that Emperor Naruhito had visited Mongolia before as Crown Prince in 2007. That trip celebrated 35 years of diplomatic relations between Mongolia and Japan. This history adds significance to the current visit and underlines the long-standing friendship.

The Emperor and Empress departed Mongolia from Chinggis Khaan International Airport. They were seen off by Mongolia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Battsetseg Batmunkh, and other government officials. The successful completion of the State Visit to Mongolia marks a new chapter in the diplomatic and cultural relationship between Mongolia and Japan. It also sets a positive course for further collaboration in peace and prosperity.
