Taiwan is stepping up efforts in the Taiwan-US tariff talks as the August 1 deadline draws near. Vice Premier Cheng Li-chiun returned to Taipei early Saturday after leading high-level negotiations in Washington. The third round of meetings with the Trump administration took place on July 8.
Cheng described the current phase of discussions as crucial. She emphasized that Taiwan aims to conclude the Taiwan-US tariff talks on time. Back in April, the US imposed a 32% tariff on imports from Taiwan, sparking concerns across key industries. During the visit to Washington, Cheng’s delegation met with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. These talks aimed to close gaps and strengthen trade relations. Cheng said Taiwan’s main priorities are protecting local businesses, ensuring food safety, and defending public health.
She urged the public to remain patient and allow negotiators the space to secure the best deal possible. According to the Cabinet, plans are already underway for the next round of Taiwan-US tariff talks. These meetings will further explore ways to ease trade tensions and promote cooperation.
Cheng stressed that Taiwan seeks not only tariff reductions but also a long-term resolution to past disputes. The government is aiming for a fair, balanced trade relationship with the US. She said the talks could serve as a platform to rebuild mutual trust and boost economic ties.
