Offshore fish farm in North Korea has become a top priority for Kim Jong-un as he pushes for regional economic growth. On Sunday, the North Korean leader visited the construction site of the Ragwon County Offshore Farm in South Hamgyong Province. State media confirmed the visit on Monday.
Kim Jong-un toured the project alongside senior officials from the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea. He emphasized that the offshore fish farm in North Korea represents a key strategy to boost local economies. According to Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Kim called the initiative a “strategic creation work.”
The Ragwon County project follows the first offshore fish farm completed in December last year in Sinpho. Now, the North’s leadership is expanding these initiatives to other coastal areas. Kim first launched the Ragwon farm project during a groundbreaking ceremony in February.
During his inspection, Kim stressed that developing fish farms can rejuvenate more than 60 coastal counties and cities. He believes these efforts will help guarantee long-term stability and sustainable development in local regions. Moreover, the farms aim to modernize the fishing sector while boosting food production.
He urged workers to speed up construction to finish the project before the 80th founding anniversary of the Workers’ Party in October. This deadline signals the symbolic and political value of the project to North Korea’s leadership.
Additionally, Kim pointed out that offshore fish farms can enhance national food security. He suggested that expanding marine farming will reduce reliance on land-based resources. Therefore, he argued that these projects contribute both economically and strategically.
In recent months, Kim has increased his focus on regional projects to improve public sentiment. North Korea continues to face worsening economic conditions, compounded by sanctions and limited international aid. Kim’s leadership now leans heavily on internal development campaigns.
The KCNA described the visit as a clear sign of Kim’s commitment to improving daily life for citizens. As work on the Ragwon site progresses, Kim plans to use it as a model for similar efforts nationwide.
Offshore fish farm in North Korea is now a symbol of resilience and renewal. With strong leadership direction, these coastal projects may shape the future of regional economies in the country.
