Emperor Emeritus Akihito Hospitalized Again for Heart Treatment Adjustment

Date:

Emperor Emeritus Akihito hospitalized on Monday to adjust his heart medication, palace officials confirmed. He is 91 years old. Doctors diagnosed him with myocardial ischemia in May. The condition limits blood flow to the heart but causes no clear symptoms.

Initially, Akihito began taking medication to increase heart blood flow. He also reduced exercise and liquid intake. However, after two months, his condition showed little improvement. So, doctors opted to add a new medication.

Consequently, Monday’s hospital stay focused on adjusting that new treatment. Medical staff monitored him closely for any side effects. The Imperial Household Agency said tests included electrocardiograms and other heart exams.

Emperor Emeritus Akihito hospitalized while riding in a palace car, wearing a surgical mask. His wife, Empress Emerita Michiko, accompanied him. Officials noted they don’t yet know how long his hospitalization will last.

Notably, Akihito has a long history of heart issues. In 2012, he underwent coronary artery bypass surgery. Later, he was diagnosed with right heart failure caused by tricuspid valve insufficiency, three years ago.

Akihito stepped down from the throne in 2019. He handed over the role to his son, Emperor Naruhito. Although retired, Akihito remains a significant figure in Japanese society. Many still admire his calm leadership and scientific curiosity.

Moreover, his health remains a sensitive matter in Japan, often closely followed by the public. This recent update follows months of quiet rest and observation. Still, doctors remain cautious due to his age and past conditions. Emperor Emeritus Akihito hospitalized again reminds many of Japan’s aging imperial family and its health concerns.
