North Korea’s Mount Kumgang World Heritage site status is now official. The country announced the news Wednesday through its state media outlets.
Meanwhile, this recognition follows UNESCO’s final decision on Sunday to include the mountain on the prestigious list. The World Heritage Committee reached this decision after evaluating North Korea’s application, which was submitted in 2021.
Clearly, Mount Kumgang World Heritage site status reflects its exceptional natural beauty and cultural significance. The mountain, located in Kangwon Province, is famed for its breathtaking views, crystal-clear waterfalls, and seasonal colors.
Furthermore, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) praised the mountain’s inclusion. It emphasized that Mount Kumgang features more than 12,000 peaks and countless rock formations. These elements, along with the region’s diverse ecosystem, contributed to its new global recognition.
Accordingly, according to KCNA, the UNESCO committee valued both the physical and cultural elements of Mount Kumgang. The agency pointed out that ancient temples, folk legends, and biodiversity played a role in UNESCO’s decision.
In addition, transitioning from scenic descriptions to cultural importance, the KCNA highlighted historic relics and religious sites in the area. These features reflect North Korea’s proud cultural heritage and add depth to Mount Kumgang’s legacy.
Notably, the Rodong Sinmun, the country’s most circulated newspaper, also reported the news. This additional coverage reflects the national importance of the mountain’s designation.
Previously, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, UNESCO delayed reviewing the 2021 application. However, the process resumed this year and resulted in Sunday’s formal decision.
As a result, now, with the addition of Mount Kumgang World Heritage site, North Korea holds three UNESCO World Heritage designations. The other two include the Complex of Koguryo Tombs and the Historic Monuments and Sites in Kaesong.
Going forward, this recent honor is expected to boost awareness of North Korea’s natural and cultural landmarks. It also showcases the country’s efforts to preserve and promote its heritage on the global stage.
