Yarlung Zangbo Hydropower Construction Begins in Xizang Region

Date:

China has officially started the Yarlung Zangbo hydropower construction in the lower reaches of the river in Xizang. On Saturday, Chinese Premier Li Qiang announced the launch during a ceremony in Nyingchi City. He also holds a position in the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China.

Overall, the Yarlung Zangbo hydropower construction marks a major infrastructure step in the southwest region. Li Qiang delivered his speech at the groundbreaking site, highlighting the project’s importance for energy, growth, and environmental goals.

In particular, officials say this project will strengthen the local power grid and support China’s shift to renewable energy. The river, known internationally as the Brahmaputra, runs through rugged and ecologically sensitive areas. Authorities emphasized their commitment to balancing energy needs with environmental protection.

During the event, Li Qiang outlined three core aims for the project. First, to supply clean energy to surrounding provinces. Second, to create stable, long-term jobs in the region. Third, to support green growth under national development plans.

Meanwhile, local leaders in Nyingchi welcomed the project as a chance to bring more investment and progress to remote areas. They pledged full support to help construction teams stay on schedule and maintain safety standards.

Furthermore, the Yarlung Zangbo hydropower construction aligns with broader national efforts to expand renewable energy. China continues to invest in hydropower to meet growing electricity demand and reduce carbon emissions.

Moreover, the project is expected to boost regional coordination in energy supply. It will help transfer electricity across provinces, improving power stability during peak usage.

To ensure safe implementation, construction teams will follow strict guidelines for engineering safety and environmental safeguards. Officials said they will use modern technology to monitor both construction progress and ecological impact.

Finally, Li Qiang closed the ceremony by urging unity and discipline across all departments involved. He said the Yarlung Zangbo hydropower construction represents China’s long-term vision for balanced development in border regions.

As work begins, the project enters a critical early phase. More updates will be shared as progress continues in the coming weeks.
