Taiwan reported another significant increase in Chinese military activity around its borders between Friday and Saturday morning. The defense ministry detected 18 Chinese military aircraft, eight naval vessels, and one official ship in the waters and skies near the island within a 24-hour period. Out of these, 15 Chinese aircraft crossed the Taiwan Strait median line. They entered Taiwan’s central and southwestern air defense identification zone, commonly called the ADIZ. This zone is critical for Taiwan to monitor potential threats to its airspace.
In response, Taiwan promptly sent fighter jets and naval ships to track the Chinese forces closely. It also deployed coastal-based missile systems to strengthen its defensive posture. So far this month, Taiwan has tracked Chinese military aircraft approaching its airspace 374 times. Additionally, it has monitored Chinese naval vessels 153 times in nearby waters. Since September 2020, China has steadily increased its presence around Taiwan. This gradual buildup involves more frequent air and sea patrols in the region. Experts describe these operations as part of China’s “gray zone” tactics. These tactics apply persistent pressure without engaging in outright warfare. The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) defines gray zone tactics as efforts to achieve security goals without using direct and large-scale military force. China’s continuous Chinese military presence near Taiwan fits this description by aiming to intimidate Taiwan while avoiding open conflict.
Military analysts suggest China uses these tactics for both political and strategic purposes. Beijing hopes to undermine Taiwan’s autonomy by maintaining constant military pressure.
