Professor Yen Ming-hung of National Taichung University of Education will become the new Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts director starting August 1. After a thorough selection process, the museum’s cultural advisory board chose him. Therefore, Yen will serve as the museum’s sixth director. Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai welcomed Yen’s appointment enthusiastically. He pointed out Yen’s diverse experience as an artist, curator, and advocate for aesthetic education. Moreover, Chen believes Yen is the perfect person to revitalize the museum’s role in the city’s cultural life.
Yen has a strong track record of integrating art into everyday environments. Specifically, he uses spatial design, curatorial projects, and creative education to connect art with communities and schools. Consequently, this approach matches the museum’s mission to bridge citizens and the arts. Furthermore, the mayor noted that Kaohsiung’s cultural infrastructure is rapidly evolving. For instance, the circular light rail is nearing completion, and the city is advancing the “Greater Art Museum Plan.” This plan aims to link the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts with the Neiwei Arts Center, thereby creating an exciting arts corridor.
Over the past decade, Yen has led campus renewal and aesthetic education programs for Taiwan’s Ministry of Education. By transforming more than 200 schools into visually engaging spaces, he encouraged creativity and appreciation for art among students. In addition, Yen holds the highest diploma from Germany’s Academy of Fine Arts Nuremberg. He has won several awards both locally and internationally for his contributions to art and education. Besides that, his broad public-sector experience includes serving on committees for the Ministry of Culture and the National Academy for Educational Research.
Therefore, Mayor Chen believes Yen’s combination of artistic talent and educational expertise makes him ideally suited to lead the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts. Under Yen’s direction, the museum will deepen its ties to the community and expand its cultural influence. In summary, Yen Ming-hung’s appointment as Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts director marks a promising new chapter. His dedication to merging art with education will help the museum thrive within Kaohsiung’s growing arts scene. Overall, the city looks forward to the innovative programs and collaborations Yen will bring.
