Enzyme Technology Boosts Taiwan’s Organic Waste Sustainability

Tetanti AgriBiotech, a Taiwan-based company, is changing how organic waste gets processed. The 78-year-old founder, Yang Chiu-chung, grew up on a farm in Nantou County. He saw how chemical fertilizers boosted crops but harmed the soil and water quality over time. This inspired him to study soil microbiology and explore organic fertilizer as a sustainable choice.

Yang’s research at National Chung Hsing University revealed a breakthrough. He found that enzyme technology for organic waste could rapidly transform waste into valuable organic fertilizer. This method restores soil health and improves its structure. Unlike traditional composting, which takes two to four months and needs large land areas, his enzyme-based process works much faster.

Moreover, Yang explains that traditional composting releases significant greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane. In contrast, enzyme technology for organic waste greatly reduces these emissions. This helps companies meet sustainability goals and lowers environmental impact. Tetanti AgriBiotech uses specially designed enzymes tailored to different waste types.

For instance, plant enzymes handle urban green waste, wood chips, and husks. Kitchen waste enzymes process fruit and vegetable scraps as well as cooked food leftovers. Enzymes targeting poultry and livestock feces manage animal waste. Additionally, animal enzymes break down high-protein waste like feathers and animal remains.

Yang criticizes the old “one-size-fits-all” method for waste treatment. Instead, his team works with over 8,000 bacteria strains to develop enzymes customized for each waste type. This strategic approach allows large enterprises to efficiently treat hundreds of tons of organic waste every day.

Besides large-scale solutions, Tetanti AgriBiotech offers modular equipment for schools, communities, and restaurants. Even households can buy small food waste composters paired with enzyme kits that speed up fermentation. This flexibility enables wider adoption of enzyme technology for organic waste.
