Tajikistan and Mongolia are stepping up their cooperation, aiming to build a stronger strategic partnership. Diplomatic relations between the two nations began on April 24, 1992. For many years, their engagement progressed slowly. However, recent developments reveal a fresh determination to expand their ties. The first-ever state visit by the Mongolian president to Tajikistan took place in July 2025. During this visit, Presidents Ukhnaagiin Khürelsükh and Emomali Rahmon held extensive talks. Both leaders expressed their commitment to deepen Tajikistan Mongolia cooperation across various sectors.
Trade between the two countries remains small but is growing rapidly. In 2024, trade totaled just $50,000. However, the first half of 2025 saw trade rise to $203,400. This increase reflects a strong mutual interest in boosting economic ties despite modest figures. Currently, Tajikistan imports mainly wool, cashmere, leather, and meat from Mongolia. Meanwhile, Tajikistan exports fruits, vegetables, cotton, and textiles to Mongolia. Both countries see room to expand these trade flows.
A key highlight was the first Tajik-Mongolian business forum. It gathered around 150 business leaders from both nations. The forum agreed to create a Business Council to promote investments and cooperation. This council will serve as a vital link for entrepreneurs on both sides. President Rahmon suggested developing a joint roadmap to guide future trade and economic projects. This roadmap will outline specific steps and support mechanisms for the private sector. The goal is to transform political will into concrete actions.
Agriculture stands out as a priority for cooperation. Mongolia offered to supply high-quality halal meat to Tajikistan and proposed veterinary collaboration. Tajikistan plans to increase imports of Mongolian wool and cashmere. Joint projects on processing wool, cotton, and cashmere are also under discussion. In energy, the two countries want to share expertise in hydropower development. Tajikistan’s success in producing 98% of its electricity from hydropower attracts Mongolia’s interest. They signed a Memorandum of Understanding covering hydropower, training, and expert exchanges.
Both countries agreed to address logistical challenges together. They plan to develop direct air links, new road routes, and regional transport corridors. Such projects will help overcome geographic hurdles and boost trade. Moreover, Tajikistan Mongolia cooperation will extend to mining, mineral processing, and local industry development. Joint ventures in these fields are being explored.
The two leaders also committed to cooperating within international organizations like the UN and SCO. They emphasized joint efforts to tackle global issues, including climate change and disaster management. In summary, Tajikistan Mongolia cooperation is entering a new phase. Both countries are focused on concrete projects and lasting partnerships. Their shared goals lay a firm foundation for a strong and sustainable bilateral relationship.
