Moscow Pyongyang flights have resumed for the first time in nearly 30 years, marking a major step in growing Russia–North Korea ties. On Sunday, Russian media confirmed the launch of the new air route operated by Nordwind Airlines.
The inaugural flight departs from Sheremetyevo Airport in Moscow at 7 p.m. local time. It heads directly to Pyongyang, taking about eight hours. The flight uses a Boeing 777-200ER, which can carry up to 440 passengers. Tickets for the first flight began at 563 US dollars. Despite the cost, the seats sold out quickly, reflecting strong early demand.
Rosaviatsia, Russia’s civil aviation authority, approved the new route earlier this year. Nordwind Airlines received permission to operate flights between the two capitals twice a week. However, officials plan to begin with just one flight per month to help build stable demand.
This marks the first regular Moscow Pyongyang flights since the mid-1990s. Until now, the only air connection between the countries was Air Koryo’s route from Pyongyang to Vladivostok. That flight, operated three times weekly, did not connect the two capitals.
The reopening of this route highlights a broader trend in Russia–North Korea relations. Since the 2022 war in Ukraine, Moscow has deepened ties with non-Western partners. North Korea has welcomed increased cooperation with Russia as both countries face international sanctions.
In June, the two nations also resumed rail service between Moscow and Pyongyang. That move signaled a shared interest in rebuilding long-dormant transportation links. Officials from both sides have framed these transportation upgrades as both practical and symbolic. They expect to expand the flight schedule as passenger demand becomes more consistent.
Moscow Pyongyang flights offer more than convenience. They reflect the strategic realignment taking place across Eurasia, where old partnerships are shifting and new alliances are taking shape. Looking ahead, both governments aim to strengthen cultural, economic, and diplomatic exchanges. More routes and cooperation are expected in the coming months.
