The Taichung Aquarium will officially open on August 21, the Taichung City Tourism Bureau announced Monday. As the first aquarium in central Taiwan, the Taichung Aquarium aims to become a key coastal tourism landmark. Moreover, it will connect several major coastal sites.
Although planning started in 2012, the Taichung Aquarium project faced numerous setbacks. In fact, the project spanned three different mayoral administrations. However, Mayor Lu Shiow-yen accelerated construction by partnering with a private organization in 2019.
Even though construction finished two years ago, the Taichung Aquarium remained closed for some time. Consequently, many residents grew concerned. Meanwhile, the public eagerly awaited its opening for over a decade. Taichung City Council Speaker Chang Ching-chao followed the project closely and acknowledged its challenges. Still, he expressed hope that the aquarium would soon bring great benefits to central Taiwan.
Furthermore, Chen Mei-hsiu, director of the Tourism Bureau, explained that the Taichung Aquarium will integrate with nearby attractions. For example, Wuqi Fishermen’s Wharf, Taichung Port Mitsui Outlet Park, Gaomei Wetlands, and Dajia Jenn Lan Temple will form a coastal tourism belt.
Importantly, the Taichung Aquarium is Taiwan’s first marine aquarium planned, built, and operated by a local government. In addition, the city adopted an operate-transfer model by selecting a private company through bidding to manage the facility efficiently.
Details about ticket prices and promotions will be revealed on the aquarium’s official website starting August 8. Besides this, the Tourism Bureau plans to host outdoor concerts and other events to increase public interest.
With easy access to both the Taichung Aquarium and Wuqi Fishermen’s Wharf, officials believe the area offers strong tourism potential. Therefore, the aquarium’s opening signals exciting growth for central Taiwan’s coastal tourism sector.
In summary, the Taichung Aquarium’s opening on August 21 will boost local tourism. As a key coastal landmark, it connects major attractions. Thus, both locals and tourists can look forward to exploring this new destination.
