Son Heung-min Departure Ends a Historic Tottenham Era

Date:

Son Heung-min departure from Tottenham Hotspur marks the end of a remarkable 10-year journey with the Premier League club. At a press conference in Seoul, Son confirmed his decision, calling it one of the toughest choices in his football career.

The Son Heung-min departure comes just before Tottenham’s preseason match against Newcastle United in Seoul. Although entering the final year of his contract, Son had been surrounded by transfer rumors for weeks. Still, few expected him to leave the club where he became a global star.

Son began his professional career in Germany with Hamburger SV at 18. He then joined Bayer Leverkusen before moving to Tottenham in 2015. His first season brought only four league goals, but Son quickly adapted. For eight straight seasons, he scored double-digit league goals.

In the 2021–2022 season, Son shared the Premier League Golden Boot with Mohamed Salah. He scored 23 goals that season, becoming the first Asian player to lead the league in scoring. Even last season, despite a dip in form, he still finished with 11 goals across all competitions.

Son has delivered memorable moments. His wonder goal against Burnley in 2019 won both the Premier League Goal of the Season and the FIFA Puskás Award. Over the years, he also collected four Premier League Player of the Month honors.

Team success remained elusive until May, when Son led Tottenham to the UEFA Europa League title. It was the club’s first major trophy in 17 years. Son was one of just 13 players in club history to lift a trophy as Spurs captain.

Statistically, Son leaves behind an incredible legacy. He ranks fifth in Tottenham’s all-time scoring list with 173 goals. He also ranks seventh in club appearances, reaching 454 games by last season’s end.

Speaking in Seoul, Son described the journey as emotional and life-changing. He admitted leaving is painful but necessary to grow. Although he declined to name his next club, he hinted at a possible move to Major League Soccer in the United States.

Son Heung-min departure now opens a new chapter, both for him and for Tottenham. His decade-long contribution, full of excellence and humility, ensures he remains a club legend forever.
