Global Parliamentary Cooperation Urged at WCSP

Date:

Global parliamentary cooperation received strong support from China’s top legislator Zhao Leji at the Sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament (WCSP). Zhao addressed parliamentary leaders from 120 countries in Geneva, urging deeper multilateral efforts in building a more peaceful and just world.

Zhao, who chairs the Standing Committee of China’s National People’s Congress (NPC), delivered a speech titled “Upholding Multilateralism and Building a Better Home Together.” He emphasized the need for legislatures to play active roles in facing today’s global challenges.

He highlighted that the world faces serious threats to peace and development. Therefore, legislative bodies must help shape a new type of international relations. Zhao called on parliaments to jointly protect global peace and support comprehensive, cooperative, and sustainable security approaches.

He stressed the importance of respecting national sovereignty and the chosen development paths of individual countries. Zhao also urged lawmakers to encourage economic partnerships that ensure mutual benefits and shared prosperity.

As part of global parliamentary cooperation, Zhao advocated for maintaining the multilateral trading system centered on the World Trade Organization. He said parliaments must provide legal backing to support balanced global growth and long-term cooperation.

In addition, Zhao encouraged cultural understanding and inclusive development by fostering exchanges between civilizations. He called for recognition of diverse cultural systems and mutual learning to build lasting harmony.

Zhao also promoted true multilateralism and fair global governance. He believes legislatures should help establish a more balanced and just international system.

Furthermore, Zhao confirmed China’s commitment to deepening global parliamentary cooperation. He expressed the NPC’s willingness to work with the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and all legislative bodies. He also called for collaborative efforts to implement China’s Global Development, Security, and Civilization Initiatives.

Zhao chaired the WCSP general debate session on Wednesday. He held meetings with parliamentary leaders from Brazil, Russia, Pakistan, and Kazakhstan. During these talks, Zhao reiterated support for continued legislative exchanges and joint initiatives.

In separate discussions, IPU President Tulia Ackson and Secretary General Martin Chungong praised China’s active role in the IPU. Both leaders welcomed the NPC’s strong support for multilateral efforts and inclusive parliamentary dialogue.

The WCSP concluded with the adoption of a high-level declaration supporting global parliamentary cooperation, peace, justice, and prosperity for all.
