The Chairman of Mongolia’s Parliament, Amarbayasgalan Dashzegve, recently met with Tulia Ackson, President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). During their official discussion, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to enhance gender equality in Mongolia. Chairman Amarbayasgalan began by expressing his appreciation for the IPU and its member countries. He specifically thanked them for supporting Mongolia’s democracy and helping improve legislative activities.
Furthermore, he pointed out a recent constitutional reform that introduced a mixed electoral system. As a result, the number of Parliament members grew to 126. Importantly, 32 of these members are women, making Mongolia a regional leader in female parliamentary representation. This progress aligns well with the IPU’s global goals to enhance gender equality.
Moreover, the Chairman shared an exciting proposal under development. The initiative aims to create an advisory body focused on Land Degradation and Desertification. This body would operate under the IPU’s Standing Committee on Sustainable Development. Mongolia plans to introduce this ahead of the 17th Session of the Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), which Mongolia will host. Amarbayasgalan expressed confidence that the IPU will provide strong support for this initiative.
Tulia Ackson, IPU President, warmly acknowledged Mongolia’s ongoing efforts to enhance gender equality. She highlighted the crucial role that cooperation between national parliaments and the IPU plays in building a fair and accessible future for all citizens. Tulia Ackson, who focuses extensively on women’s empowerment and gender equality, reassured that the IPU will actively back Mongolia’s strategic plan. This plan aims to protect human rights and create a legal framework centered around the people.
In summary, both leaders emphasized that strengthening gender equality remains a top priority. The IPU’s backing encourages Mongolia to continue advancing legislative reforms and social initiatives. With shared commitment, Mongolia moves closer to a more equal society, supported by international partnerships like the IPU.
