Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense has introduced drone operations training into the curriculum of its military academies this year. This new program forms part of the annual eight-week joint basic training for cadets across nine military schools. By incorporating drone skills, Taiwan aims to modernize its defense capabilities and prepare soldiers for future battlefield demands.
The training program breaks down into three clear phases. First, cadets learn essential pre- and post-flight safety checks to ensure proper drone handling. Then, the program moves into simulator operation, where students practice flying drones virtually. Finally, cadets must complete a dynamic flight test, proving their ability to control drones in real scenarios.
During the simulator phase, trainees use a smartphone app combined with a remote controller. This setup allows them to practice takeoff, landing, and basic flight maneuvers safely. After mastering the simulator tasks, cadets qualify to attempt the dynamic flight test.
The flight test challenges students with various exercises, including takeoff, side hovering, and flying forward and backward. These exercises build a strong foundation in drone control. Consequently, cadets develop the skills needed for handling more advanced drone models in the future.
Notably, the training follows strict guidelines from Taiwan’s Civil Aviation Administration. These regulations ensure that the drone operations training meets safety and operational standards. Thus, the Ministry of National Defense guarantees that cadets become competent and responsible drone operators.
This updated program arrives as Taiwan plans a significant expansion of its drone capabilities. The government aims to deploy nearly 49,000 drones within the next two years. Additionally, the Armaments Bureau has called on domestic manufacturers to propose designs for five types of military drones. These new models are scheduled for development by 2027.
