Fukuoka Governor Seitaro Hattori Wins Re-election with Broad Support

Date:

Fukuoka Governor Seitaro Hattori secured a second term in Sunday’s gubernatorial election, defeating three challengers in a race that drew endorsements from across the political spectrum.

The 70-year-old incumbent, running as an independent, was backed by Japan’s major political parties including the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan (CDP), the Democratic Party for the People (DPP), Komeito, and the Social Democratic Party (SDP). His victory reinforces his leadership in Fukuoka Prefecture, located in southwestern Japan.

Voter turnout stood at 31.58%, a modest increase from the record-low 29.61% recorded in the 2020 election.

Hattori campaigned on his achievements from his first term, gaining wide support for initiatives such as installing air conditioning in public high school gymnasiums and easing financial burdens for families with three or more children through nursery school fee reductions.

His closest rival, 45-year-old lawyer Koichiro Yoshida, ran as an independent with backing from the Japanese Communist Party and advocated for an immediate hike in the minimum wage. Two other candidates, Nobuo Shindo, 76, and Takahiro Fujimaru, 48, ran on platforms promoting basic income and original policy ideas, respectively, but failed to garner significant voter support.

Hattori’s re-election signals continued political stability in Fukuoka and reflects strong approval of his policy direction and administrative performance.
