Reports confirm that North Korean soldiers are fighting directly alongside Russian forces. At first, they suffered high casualties due to poor training and coordination. However, they quickly adapted to modern tactics. For instance, they learned to operate drones and counter enemy unmanned systems.
North Korea combat gains also come from large-scale arms support. Pyongyang supplies around 40 percent of Russia’s key munitions. These include 122 mm and 152 mm shells, as well as artillery systems and missiles. This assistance fills critical gaps for Moscow as sanctions slow its production.

The two countries also cooperate on drone development. North Korea is preparing to produce Russian-style Shahed drones locally. These low-cost, long-range attack drones have already been used in Ukraine. Such production marks a major leap in Pyongyang’s capabilities.
South Korean intelligence reports that Pyongyang plans to expand its deployments. More combat engineers and builders will join Russian operations. These units will manage mine-clearing and construction tasks. Consequently, cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang is expected to grow further.
North Korea combat gains extend to strategic training as well. Troops are receiving instruction in drone warfare and advanced air defense. They also gain real battlefield experience, which strengthens their military confidence. Analysts warn that this may shift security balances in Asia and Europe.
The growing partnership with Russia could also reduce Beijing’s influence. China has long served as North Korea’s buffer with the West. However, closer ties with Moscow provide Pyongyang with new independence. This development adds tension for South Korea, the United States, and European allies.
Ultimately, Pyongyang is using the war to transform its military. Through money, weapons, and training, it now claims modern capabilities. Therefore, its combat strength and global leverage are likely to expand further.
