AI Diplomacy Trip Sparks Political Backlash in South Korea

Date:

President Lee Jae Myung’s recent trip to San Francisco has ignited a political dispute over what critics call misguided AI diplomacy. Rep. Na Kyung-won of the People Power Party dismissed the visit as little more than a credit-grabbing junket. She argued that Lee capitalized on deals Korean companies had already secured on their own.

The Ministry of Science and ICT organized the summit, bringing Lee together with major technology executives. Leaders from Anthropic, OpenAI, Nvidia, and Broadcom attended alongside representatives from Samsung Electronics, SK Group, Hyundai Motor Group, and Naver. Consequently, the event drew significant attention as a showcase of Korea’s ambitions in global AI diplomacy.

However, Na questioned why corporate achievements appeared tied so closely to the president’s schedule. She specifically criticized Presidential Chief of Staff for Policy Kim Yong-beom for announcing Samsung’s accomplishments during the trip. Furthermore, she suggested Lee should step back and let companies negotiate more freely among themselves.

Beyond the summit itself, Na accused the administration of holding contradictory attitudes toward business. Overseas, she claimed, officials embrace corporate leaders warmly while imposing heavy regulations on companies back home. Meanwhile, she linked this inconsistency to broader concerns about industrial and labor policy failures.

Na also targeted the Yellow Envelope Act, which broadens collective bargaining obligations for companies. Additionally, the law restricts employers from pursuing damages connected to labor disputes. According to Na, this legislation was pushed through purely to win votes rather than support genuine economic growth.

She therefore urged the government to abandon what she called unjust and damaging economic legislation altogether. Otherwise, she warned, symbolic AI diplomacy gestures alone will not secure Korea’s competitive position. Ultimately, Na insisted that real industrial reform matters more than diplomatic photo opportunities abroad.

The controversy highlights deepening tension between South Korea’s political parties over economic strategy. As AI diplomacy becomes a recurring theme, opposition leaders are demanding substance over symbolism moving forward.
