AI Pediatrician to Expand in China After Success at Beijing Children’s Hospital

Date:

China’s first artificial intelligence (AI) pediatrician is set to enter more grassroots hospitals after receiving strong approval during its debut at Beijing Children’s Hospital earlier this year.

Named “Futang·Baichuan,” the AI model was officially introduced this week alongside two specialized applications — the AI Pediatrician Basic Version and the Expert Version. These tools are designed to assist in pediatric diagnostics and treatment planning, combining advanced technology with decades of clinical knowledge.

According to developers, the applications will be deployed across community clinics and medical centers in Beijing and over 150 county-level hospitals in neighboring Hebei Province, greatly expanding access to pediatric care in underserved areas.

Trained on clinical data from more than 300 top pediatric specialists and a vast archive of high-quality medical records, the AI pediatrician boasts a deep knowledge base for both common and rare childhood diseases. It utilizes evidence-based medical practices and offers personalized treatment plans through sophisticated clinical reasoning and multi-round dialogue with patients’ families.

“The Basic Version targets routine pediatric care and supports frontline clinicians, while the Expert Version helps manage rare and complex cases, improving the efficiency and accuracy of clinical decision-making,” said Ni Xin, director of Beijing Children’s Hospital.”

As an example, Ni highlighted that the Basic Version is capable of distinguishing early signs of viral encephalitis, often misidentified as the common cold, which can lead to more timely testing and fewer misdiagnoses.

Since its initial rollout on February 13, the Expert Version has already assisted in more than ten multidisciplinary case reviews, with its diagnostic accuracy aligning 95 percent with expert conclusions.

The development of “Futang·Baichuan” stems from a collaborative effort between Beijing Children’s Hospital, Baichuan AI, and Xiaoerfang, forming a tripartite partnership in August 2023 to pioneer AI-driven pediatric solutions and ensure more equitable access to quality health care across China.
