Baishatun Mazu Pilgrimage Draws Record Crowds

Date:

The Baishatun Mazu Pilgrimage completed its 10-day journey across central Taiwan on Sunday afternoon.
Despite heavy rain, thousands gathered at Gongtian Temple in Miaoli to welcome Mazu’s return.

The pilgrimage began on May 2, departing from Gongtian Temple with great energy and devotion.
Along the way, the pink palanquin carrying Mazu traveled over 300 kilometers round-trip to Yunlin and back.

This year’s event marked a major milestone.
More than 700,000 people participated, making it the largest Baishatun Mazu Pilgrimage in history.

Unlike other pilgrimages, this journey follows no fixed path.
Instead, palanquin carriers rely on divine guidance to determine the goddess’s route.

As a result, the journey is always unpredictable, sometimes even entering new regions.
This year, for the first time since the 1860s, the pilgrimage entered Nantou County.

On the sixth night, the palanquin stopped at Songbailing Shoutian Temple in Mingjian Township.
Local residents greeted the visit with joy and reverence.

Throughout the journey, the spiritual energy remained high.
Despite storms and long days, pilgrims continued with faith and determination.

The pink palanquin returned to Gongtian Temple around 3:45 p.m. on Sunday.
Soon after, a reintegration ceremony took place to return the idol to her pedestal.

As tradition requires, temple staff drew curtains around the pedestal.
These will remain closed until May 22 to allow the goddess a sacred rest.

By then, regular worship activities will resume at the temple.
In the meantime, pilgrims are encouraged to rest and reflect on the journey.

Temple officials thanked all who joined the Baishatun Mazu Pilgrimage this year.
They hope the goddess blesses every pilgrim with health and peace in the coming year.

As spring 2026 approaches, organizers already look forward to welcoming faithful pilgrims once again.
