Tzu Chi’s Buddha Day Celebration Draws 20,000 Participants

Date:

The Tzu Chi Foundation hosted an inspiring and meaningful Buddha Day celebration in Taipei, drawing around 20,000 attendees. The event took place at the iconic Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, where President Lai Ching-te also joined the festivities.

Buddha Day, marked by the full moon, has become an important occasion. Tzu Chi has made it a tradition to hold the celebration on the second Sunday of May, combining it with Mother’s Day and Global Tzu Chi Day. This year’s celebration stood out, emphasizing both peace and compassion.

Even though rain poured throughout the evening, the participants remained enthusiastic. Many wore raincoats and stayed focused on the sacred rituals. As they gathered, attendees recited prayers, calling for world peace and relief from suffering. Buddhist monks from across Taiwan added their voices to the prayers, reinforcing the collective call for peace.

The ceremony began with the time-honored Buddha bathing ritual. In this ritual, attendees used fragrant water to wash the statues of the young Buddha. This act recalls a sacred story from Buddha’s birth, when two heavenly streams appeared to bathe both the Buddha and his mother.

This ritual carries significant meaning. It aims to cleanse the heart and inspire positive thoughts. As people participate, they receive a reminder to cultivate compassion and spiritual growth. Additionally, the ceremony encourages everyone to meet the Buddha in their hearts, especially on his birthday.

Tzu Chi will also take the Buddha Day celebration to communities beyond the main event. They plan to hold mobile Buddha Bathing ceremonies across multiple counties and cities. These ceremonies will also reach hospitals, schools, and social welfare organizations. This year, Tzu Chi expects to organize 800 Buddha Bathing ceremonies in 44 countries, with a projected 200,000 participants. Through this initiative, the foundation hopes to spread the message of peace to a global audience.

Ultimately, the Buddha Day celebration emphasizes compassion, mindfulness, and unity. It helps participants deepen their connection with the teachings of Buddha while fostering positive intentions for a peaceful world.
