Flight Information Leak Sparks Legal Action

Date:

Flight information leak concerns have taken center stage as three individuals face prosecution in a high-profile privacy case involving BTS. The suspects include an employee of a foreign airline who allegedly accessed confidential data and sold it through illicit channels.

According to authorities, the employee obtained the flight information of BTS members and other celebrities. Furthermore, accomplices received this sensitive data and sold it via social media direct messages and open chat rooms. These exchanges reportedly earned the suspects tens of millions of won, though the exact figures remain undisclosed.

Moreover, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency’s cyber investigation unit led the inquiry. Investigators uncovered digital proof of unauthorized access to airline systems and financial transactions linked to the sales. This evidence played a crucial role in advancing the case to prosecution.

The flight information leak was first detected in 2023, prompting an internal response from Hybe, the label behind BTS, Seventeen, and Enhypen. Consequently, the company formed a dedicated task force to monitor privacy breaches involving its artists. Through months of tracking, Hybe identified multiple accounts trading in illegal data.

In February, authorities arrested the airline employee. This was followed by two more arrests in March, marking significant progress in addressing the flight information leak. Therefore, Hybe’s vigilance proved instrumental in building the case and bringing the suspects to justice.

Importantly, privacy violations involving celebrities have long plagued the entertainment industry. Overzealous fans, known as “sasaeng,” have exploited leaked flight data to board the same flights as idols. In some cases, these individuals altered in-flight meal orders or interfered with bookings and seat assignments.

Meanwhile, industry insiders have consistently warned about the dangers posed by these intrusions. The flight information leak highlights the urgent need for stronger safeguards in both aviation and entertainment sectors.

In response, Hybe reaffirmed its stance against such breaches. The company stated it will fully support the investigation and ensure those responsible face consequences. “We maintain a zero-tolerance policy toward crimes that commercialize and traffic in artists’ personal information,” a spokesperson said. “There will be no compromise or leniency.”

Ultimately, this latest incident is expected to serve as a warning. Legal consequences may finally deter similar violations in the future.
