China Condemns US’ Reciprocal Tariffs, Warns of Countermeasures

Date:

On Thursday, China’s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, Guo Jiakun, sharply criticized the United States’ recent decision to impose reciprocal tariffs. The tariffs, including a 34 percent tax on Chinese goods, were seen as a serious violation of World Trade Organization (WTO) rules. Guo argued that the US move undermines the integrity of the multilateral trading system, which is based on fairness and established rules.

Guo’s comments came during a regular press conference in Beijing, where he addressed a question regarding the US’ tariffs. “China strongly opposes the US’ actions and will resolutely take countermeasures to safeguard its legitimate interests,” Guo said. He reiterated that China has consistently emphasized the detrimental effects of a trade war. According to the spokesperson, trade protectionism ultimately harms all parties involved and creates no real winners.

Furthermore, Guo highlighted that China has always advocated for resolving trade disputes through dialogue rather than confrontation. “China urges the US to immediately correct its wrongdoings and resolve trade disputes with China and other countries through equal, respectful, and mutually beneficial dialogue,” he stressed. This message aligns with China’s consistent approach to international trade relations.

The Chinese government has been vocal in its opposition to the growing trend of protectionism, warning that such policies could destabilize the global economy. Guo’s statement reflects China’s ongoing effort to balance assertiveness with diplomacy. China has shown that it will not hesitate to defend its economic interests, but it also remains open to negotiations to address trade issues.

The controversy over tariffs marks another chapter in the ongoing trade tension between the US and China. As both countries prepare for potential countermeasures, the international community watches closely, hoping for a resolution that maintains stability in the global market.
