Death With Reprieve for Two Former Chinese Defense Ministers

Date:

A Chinese military court sentenced two former defense ministers to death with reprieve on Thursday. Wei Fenghe and Li Shangfu received the same penalty for separate graft cases. The court also convicted both men of accepting bribes. Consequently, this death with reprieve means the sentences have a two-year suspension period. Li Shangfu faced an additional charge of offering bribes to others. The court stripped both men of their political rights for life. Moreover, authorities will confiscate all of their personal property.

This death with reprieve follows a strict legal procedure under Chinese law. After the two-year reprieve period ends, the court will commute the sentences to life imprisonment. However, the ruling explicitly states that no further commutation or parole will be allowed. Therefore, Wei and Li will spend the rest of their lives behind bars. Both men previously served as members of the Central Military Commission. They also held the position of state councilor during their careers. Wei Fenghe served as defense minister from 2018 to 2023. Li Shangfu held the same post from March to October 2023.

The death with reprieve sentences mark a significant escalation in China’s military anti-corruption campaign. The People’s Liberation Army has faced a series of high-profile graft investigations recently. Nevertheless, imposing a death sentence on a former defense minister remains extremely rare. Observers note that Li Shangfu’s career ended abruptly in August 2023. Authorities placed him under investigation just five months after his appointment. Wei Fenghe’s investigation began after his retirement from public office. Consequently, this death with reprieve sends a powerful message about accountability at the highest levels.

Corruption has long plagued China’s military procurement and logistics systems. The Central Military Commission has intensified its disciplinary inspections in recent years. For instance, several senior officers have faced prosecution for embezzlement and bribery. However, the death with reprieve for two defense ministers is unprecedented. Legal experts suggest the severity reflects the massive scale of their crimes. The court did not disclose the exact amount of bribes involved. Nonetheless, the ruling emphasized that their actions severely undermined military discipline. Therefore, this death with reprieve demonstrates the leadership’s determination to purge corruption.

Looking ahead, the military court will continue handling related cases. Other officials implicated in the same networks may face trials soon. The death with reprieve for Wei and Li will likely deter future misconduct. Young officers now understand that even the highest positions offer no protection. China’s anti-corruption agency has praised the verdict as a major victory. Meanwhile, the families of both defendants may appeal the ruling. However, legal observers expect the Supreme Court to uphold the sentences. The death with reprieve ensures that both men will never regain freedom. This case will remain a landmark in China’s judicial history for years to come.
