China delivered the world’s first 10,000-vehicle-class car carrier equipped with solar power technology Tuesday. Guangzhou Shipyard International completed this delivery to South Korea’s Korea Ocean Business Corporation through remote signing ceremony. Consequently, this vessel represents a significant milestone in sustainable maritime shipping innovation globally.
Indeed, this car carrier holds 10,800 vehicles and operates using dual LNG and conventional fuel systems. Moreover, it marks the fourth vessel of this class delivered by China overall. Notably, it stands as the first worldwide featuring an integrated photovoltaic power generation system. Furthermore, GSI developed this vessel jointly alongside the Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute.
Additionally, the ship received classification from both Det Norske Veritas and the Korean Register organizations. Therefore, this certification allows the car carrier to operate freely across unrestricted waters worldwide. Measuring 230 meters in length with a 40-meter beam, the vessel showcases substantial cargo capacity. Its design includes a shaft generator alongside a 200-kilowatt peak solar grid-connected system.
This combination delivers improved energy efficiency while simultaneously reducing harmful emissions during ocean voyages. Meanwhile, onboard LNG storage capacity ensures sufficient fuel supply throughout entire journey durations. Additionally, the vessel features fourteen vehicle decks, including nine fixed and five adjustable configurations. This flexible design accommodates passenger cars, vans, freight trailers and heavy trucks simultaneously.
Beyond standard vehicles, the car carrier can also transport certain packaged dangerous goods under international maritime regulations. Following delivery, Hyundai Glovis will lease this vessel for operations connecting major global shipping routes. These routes will link Asia with Southeast Asia, North America and Europe specifically.
