China-EU Trade Talks to Resume in Paris

Date:

China-EU trade talks are set to resume in early June as senior officials prepare for another round of economic dialogue. Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao will meet EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic on the sidelines of a WTO ministerial meeting in Paris. A source familiar with the matter confirmed the meeting to the Global Times on Monday. Both sides plan to exchange views on expanding cooperation and preparing for upcoming high-level exchanges. The trade talks continue gaining momentum as global trade faces rising challenges.

In recent months, Beijing and Brussels have dramatically increased diplomatic and commercial engagements. The second China-EU Working Group on Financial Cooperation met in Brussels from May 13 to 14. Just days later, the 10th China-France High-Level Economic and Financial Dialogue took place in Paris. These back-to-back meetings reflect a strategic push to stabilize and strengthen bilateral relations. China-EU trade talks have now become a central platform for advancing shared economic interests.

Analysts view the growing cooperation as a necessary response to rising global trade uncertainty. Jian Junbo of Fudan University said the two sides must strengthen coordination to counter protectionism and unilateralism. He described China and the EU as “main forces” supporting multilateral trade and global economic governance. For this reason, Jian emphasized the need for ongoing dialogue and structured engagement. He believes the trade talks could inject much-needed stability into the global economy.

This next meeting will mark the third between Wang and Sefcovic in 2025 alone. Since the EU trade chief visited Beijing on March 28, the two ministers have stayed in frequent contact. They last spoke on April 8 via video conference and agreed to begin talks on market access and electric vehicle pricing. The two sides also pledged to discuss deeper investment cooperation in the auto sector. China-EU trade talks have clearly moved from rhetoric to structured negotiations.

Looking ahead, Jian outlined three priorities for stronger China-EU cooperation. First, both sides should expand ties in green energy, artificial intelligence and emerging technologies. Second, they must maintain existing dialogue mechanisms and resolve disputes constructively. Finally, they should increase collaboration in global governance institutions. With China-EU trade talks advancing steadily, many expect stronger commercial and strategic alignment in the coming months. For now, all eyes turn to Paris.
