China and Fiji celebrated 50 years of diplomatic relations on Wednesday. Both nations reaffirmed their commitment to a stronger strategic partnership based on mutual trust and cooperation.
Chinese President Xi Jinping and Fijian President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu exchanged congratulatory messages to mark the occasion. Moreover, Xi noted that Fiji was the first Pacific island nation to establish diplomatic ties with China. This step laid the foundation for a lasting strategic partnership between the two countries.
Additionally, Xi said both sides have supported each other in pursuing development paths suited to their national interests. He stressed that their cooperation has remained stable and mutually beneficial despite global political changes.
In recent years, China and Fiji have expanded collaboration through Belt and Road projects. These initiatives have boosted infrastructure, trade, and development while strengthening their friendship. Furthermore, Xi said these efforts have enhanced prosperity across the Pacific region.
Xi also pledged to further elevate the strategic partnership by broadening cooperation in trade, technology, and sustainable development. He expressed readiness to work with Lalabalavu to deepen trust and promote cultural exchanges.
Meanwhile, President Lalabalavu called the 50th anniversary an important milestone in bilateral ties. He emphasized that the relationship rests on mutual respect, common interests, and a shared vision for peace and prosperity.

On the same day, Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka exchanged messages. Likewise, Li reaffirmed China’s commitment to working with Fiji to promote practical cooperation. Rabuka said Fiji values its partnership with China and appreciates the tangible results it brings to both peoples.
