Cargo truck traffic between China and North Korea has surged dramatically in mid-2026. Dozens of trucks now line up daily at the Dandong-Sinuiju border crossing. This increase follows last month’s summit between the two nations’ leaders.
Chinese President Xi Jinping traveled to Pyongyang on June 8 for his first visit in seven years. During the summit, Xi and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un pledged to expand cooperation. Their agreement covered trade, agriculture and several other economic sectors.
Trucks hauling large containers now queue extensively outside customs in Dandong, Liaoning province. A source told reporters that more than 100 trucks sometimes enter Sinuiju in a single day. This scale suggests substantial volumes of goods moving between the neighboring countries.
While exact cargo contents remain unconfirmed, sources indicate construction materials dominate Chinese exports northward. North Korea’s nationwide construction drive has significantly increased demand for cement and building tiles. Additionally, hospital modernization projects have boosted demand for medical equipment and electronics.
Trade between China and North Korea has climbed steadily since the start of 2026. Bilateral trade totaled 8.71 billion yuan during the first five months, according to Chinese customs data. This figure represents a 17.6 percent increase compared to the same period last year.
Specifically, Chinese exports rose 8.8 percent to reach 6.72 billion yuan during this period. Meanwhile, Chinese imports from North Korea jumped 62.4 percent to 1.99 billion yuan. These numbers indicate deepening economic integration following the recent diplomatic summit.
The summit appears to have eased customs procedures between the two neighboring countries. Consequently, North Korean trading companies may be expanding dealings with their Chinese counterparts more freely. Whether this surge represents a lasting trend or temporary spike remains uncertain.
Nevertheless, the growing convoys outside Dandong customs clearly reflect strengthening China North Korea trade ties. Moving forward, analysts will watch closely whether this momentum continues through the remainder of 2026.
